Protesters gather in front of Sen. Collins office after support of tax bill
PORTLAND (WGME) -- Protesters gathered outside Senator Susan Collins' offices in Portland after she announced her support for the GOP tax reform bill.
Within an hour of Senator Susan Collins' announcement, a group of protesters showed up outside of her office in downtown Portland, saying they were unhappy with her decision.
This was organized by Diane Russell and Mainers for Accountable Leadership.
Russell is a Democrat running for Maine governor in 2018.
She says that this tax reform bill has a horrifying impact on the elderly.
She’s also very upset with what she’s calling a massive tax cut for our nation's wealthiest.
She said Collins' support of the bill is a betrayal of Maine people.
"In these economic times, millionaires and billionaires should be giving to charity, especially this time of year, not asking for it from the government,” Russell said. “And I'm really disappointed in Senator Susan Collins for supporting that and making sure the wealthiest among us take from the poorest among us."
Russell said she is hopeful that Collins will be watching the reactions of Mainers in the attempt to change her mind before she casts her vote.
