Florida senior denied graduation walk because of shoes
(WEAR) — Some high school seniors at Tate High School were not allowed to walk across the stage Thursday morning with their classmates to pick up their diplomas.
It's all because some school officials said they weren't wearing the right shoes.
Two weeks ago, a letter was sent to parents outlining the do's and don'ts for graduation.
The letter recommended that seniors wear "professional attire."
One student wore a pair of white and black dress shoes to graduation. He was not allowed in.
Others were also turned away at the door.
WEAR News talked with Shemika Montgomery Thursday night about her son being denied the chance to walk across the stage.
Montgomery's son was wearing the white and black dress shoes. She says even when he changed his shoes, he was again denied access.
Montgomery says when she spoke to Principal Laura Touchstone, Touchstone said the shoes were fine.
"She said 'I don't consider these to be tennis shoes, he should have been allowed to walk,'" Montgomery said.
Montgomery will be at Tate High on Friday morning with other parents to talk with school officials and to pick up her child's diploma.
Montgomery's son Trey Durant will attend Coastal Alabama next year on a basketball scholarship.
WEAR reached out to the Escambia County School District for a statement and is waiting for a response.
