WASHINGTON (TND) — As the country reflects on the anniversary of the 9/11 terror attacks, some immigration experts and Republican lawmakers warn the country is no safer today than 22 years ago.
"We are vulnerable to global terrorism because this administration has thrown open the border and will not protect us," Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, said on his podcast. "It’s also an invitation to terrorists. If you’re the next planner of 9/11 it’s obvious where you go. You go to Mexico and you come right across."
Customs and Border Patrol data shows 146 foreigners on the terror watch list attempted to cross the southern border so far this year. There were three attempts at the northern border this year. These numbers are up 50% from last year and are more than the last 6 years combined.
Experts like former U.S. Customs and Border Patrol chief Robert Vitiello point out these are just the ones we know about.
"We still have thousands of people getting away from the border patrol every 24 hours and it’s just been encouraged by the choices that this administration has made," explained Vitiello on Monday.
According to the Washington Post, border arrests surpassed 177,000 in August, up from the 99,539 arrests made in June.
"It wasn’t that long ago this would be the slowest time of year on the Southwest border because of the extreme temperatures that occur in places like Arizona and deep south Texas," said Vitiella. "But people are choosing to bring their families into the United States at record numbers. Why? Because they know they’re going to be released by this administration."
A Fox News Poll taken in August shows just 33% of voters approve of how Biden is handling border security.
