A New Jersey woman waiting to get her handgun permit permit was found stabbed to death outside her home this week, allegedly by the very person she was trying to get a gun to protect herself against.

According to the Courier-Post, 39-year-old Carol Browne was trying to obtain a permit after filing a restraining order against an ex-boyfriend, installing security cameras around her home and an alarm system. Browne took the measures to protect herself against 45-year-old Michael Eitel, her ex-boyfriend.

Eitel is believed to have broken the windows out of her car and Browne was feeling the impact of his threats. Police told the paper she had even just inquired about the permit process after over a month of waiting. Now, many are wondering if the process is broken and if the system failed Browne?

Eitel is currently on the run from police, charged with Browne's murder. This isn't his first brush with the law either; he served a five year sentence related to an assault on a girlfriend at the time.
