Tennessee legislation would require certain sex offenders to undergo chemical castration
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WZTV) -A bill submitted for consideration in the Tennessee General Assembly would require certain sex offenders to be chemically castrated as a condition of their parole.
Rep. Bruce Griffey (R-Paris), submitted HB 1585 on Thursday. Under the legislation, persons convicted of a sexual offense against a child under the age of 13 would have to undergo chemical castration treatment when they become eligible for parole.
While the legislation would allow the offender to elect foregoing castration -or stopping the 'treatment' if they so choose, the decision would "constitute a violation of the person's parole" and the offender would return to jail for the remainder of their sentence.
Offenders would be required to undergo the treatment no less than a month before their release and continue the treatment until a court determines it is no longer necessary. The Tennessee Department of Health would be in charge of the conducting the procedure.
Offenders would also be responsible for paying for the castration unless they were found to be indigent.
The legislation describes chemical castration treatment as " receiving medication, including, but not limited to, medroxyprogesterone acetate treatment or the chemical equivalent, that, among other things, reduces, inhibits, or blocks the production of testosterone, hormones, or other chemicals in a person's body."
