Tennessee kids got the chance to sit in on meetings at the state capitol on Tuesday.

IT's all part of the 'Day on the Hill,' where community organizers from across the state connect with Tennessee lawmakers.

Topics up for discussion on Tuesday included school breakfast and after school programs. Organizations including the Tennessee Afterschool Network, the Boy and Girls Club and the YMCA sent groups to the capitol.

Fox 17 News Anchor Erika Kurree emceed the opening program as students and organization leaders were briefed before knocking on lawmakers' doors and attending committee meetings.

"This was an excellent opportunity for the girls to come to learn what it looks like to talk to a legislator," said Abbey Rice, Girls Inc. program coordinator. To learn that they're human, to learn they're approachable, to have a voice, to share what's on their hearts and minds and what they want for their futures."

Senator Steve Dickerson shared some advice with the groups, saying the best time to contact lawmakers is in the spring.
