NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WZTV) — Police departments around the country use crime prediction software. Meteorologists use computer models for weather forecasting. The Tennessee Highway Patrol uses a number of factors to create a formula in order to predict where and when an accident will take place.
The "TITAN" system (Tennessee Integrated Traffic Analytics Network) examines factors like, time of day, location, weather, special events, and historical crash data to predict where and when an accident might take place.
THP Colonel Tracy Trott says the program went live in 2013, "I'm trying to get to the point where troopers can go to the TITAN system to look at the predictive analytics program, probabilities in that area, and can self deploy to that area to try to prevent it, that's where we're trying to get to", said, Trott.
Since January 1st, 326 people have died on Tennessee highways and state routes. The hope is that "TITAN" will continue to be a tool to help law enforcement to be at the right place at the right time before a crash occurs and in turn prevent serious injuries and deaths.
