A Gallatin High School student was killed over the weekend after he was shot during an unrelated incident.

Gallatin High School sent an email to parents sharing news of the death of sophomore Bobby Transou.

According to the email, Transou was shot while he was a bystander during an unrelated domestic dispute and later died from his injuries.

The Sumner County Sheriff's Office held a press conference Monday morning to report the suspect is in custody.

The sheriff's office says Devon Fields had assaulted his wife, Jessica Fields. The investigation found Jessica shot Devon Fields during the dispute "in an effort to protect herself." Fields, her children, and a visiting minor—Transou—tried to flee the scene in a vehicle to escape Devon Fields. That's when Devon Fields retrieved a handgun and starting firing shots. Transou was shot and later died at the hospital.

Devon Fields has been arrested and faces several charges including first degree murder, attempted first degree murder, aggravated assault, three counts of reckless endangerment, unlawful possession of a weapon, and violation of bond.

The investigation remains ongoing.

School leaders released the following statement Monday:

Gallatin High School Sophomore Bobby Transou passed away this weekend. Gallatin High School and all of Sumner County Schools grieve with the Transou family over this tragic loss.

School administration has reached out the family and offered our support to all who knew and cared about Bobby. Grief counselors and extra support staff will be available this week to talk to with any students who may need additional support.
