Rutherford County escapees accused of assaulting officer captured

Two Rutherford County escapees have been captured.

TBI Top 10 Most Wanted suspects Dewayne Lee Halfacre, 43, of Lynchburg and Jonathan Cody Baxter, 28, of Smyrna escaped from Rutherford County Adult Detention Center just after midnight Wednesday morning.

The RSCO said both fugitives were taken into custody late Thursday morning near U.S. Highway 41/70 South near the overhead bridge.

The two are accused of overpowering a female jail guard who was sent to the hospital for her injuries but has since been released. They were believed to be armed with a homemade weapon.

Both Halfacre and Baxter are facing new charges of aggravated assault of a first responder and felony escape.

Rutherford County Schools are returning to normal operations.

“We are grateful for the law enforcement partners who joined us in searching tirelessly for the fugitives,” Fitzhugh said. “We sincerely thank our citizens who called with information. Our citizens and their tips made our job easier. We appreciate the cooperation with the Rutherford County Schools in keeping the students safe with the code yellow.”

Rutherford County schools are taking extra precautions as two inmates who escaped after overpowering a jail guard.

TBI Top 10 Most Wanted suspects Dewayne Lee Halfacre, 43, of Lynchburg and Jonathan Cody Baxter, 28, of Murfreesboro escaped from Rutherford County Adult Detention Center just after midnight Wednesday morning.

The two are accused of overpowering a female jail guard who was sent to the hospital for her injuries but has since been released. They are believed to be armed with a homemade weapon.

As of Thursday morning, the search is concentrating on the Old Nashville Highway area.

Schools in the area will continue to operate on a Code Yellow lockout, restricting visitors from entering the school and School Resource Officers will be on hand.

Baxter is being held for failing to appear in court on a theft charge and Halfacre is charged with aggravated assault. Both escapees were last seen wearing white T-shirts and orange pants.

A $6,000 reward is being offered in their capture. If seen, call 1-800-TBI-FIND.
