Researchers find some mouthwashes, nasal rinses could help reduce coronavirus spread

A recent study published in the Journal of Medical Virology finds some mouthwashes and nasal rinses could help protect against the spread of coronaviruses.

Researchers from the Pennsylvania State College of Medicine tested several mouthwash and nasal rinse products on infectious stocks of human coronaviruses to determine their affect on the viruses.

They found some of the products were able to reduce the amount of infectious virus by up to 90% after just 1 minute of contact time and up to 99% when in contact with the virus for longer periods.

Researchers tested the effects on the viruses using a Neti Pot, a nasal solution containing 1% baby shampoo, and oral rinses including Crest Pro Health, Listerine, Listerine Ultra, Equate Antiseptic, CVS Antiseptic, and Orajel Antiseptic rinse.

While use of a Neti Pot saline rinse did not have an impact on the virus, a nasal rinse containing 1% baby shampoo was able to inactivate 99% of the virus after 1 minute of use and 99% after 2 minutes.

Listerine Antiseptic was found to decrease infectious virus levels by 99.99% and after 1 to 2 minutes, researchers were unable to detect any infectious virus left. It was found to be the most-effective product, while other related oral rinses were effective but needed longer contact time to kill 99.99% of the virus.

Researchers say the findings need more testing in clinical settings but could provide another layer of protection to be adopted in addition to wearing masks and social distancing to prevent spread of COVID-19.
