Philadelphia Eagles defensive end Derek Barnett's brother killed in Nashville crash
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WZTV) —
A defensive end for the Philadelphia Eagles lost his brother in a Nashville crash Tuesday.
DE Derek Barnett's brother, David Barnett, was killed in a head-on collision on Burkitt Rd. near Whittemore Lane, according to a Brentwood Academy coach.
David's mother tells FOX 17 News that he will be loved and missed by all.
Fatal crash investigators with Metro Police charged Felipe Castelblanco, 47, with vehicular homicide by intoxication for the crash that killed Barnett.
Officers say Castelblanco was driving his 1997 Ford Econoline van westbound on Burkitt Rd. when he crossed over into oncoming traffic before colliding with Barnett, who was driving a 2011 Dodge Challenger.
Barnett died at the scene. Investigators say Castelblanco walked away from the crash, but was taken into custody a short distance away.
Authorities tell FOX 17 News Castelblanco smelled strongly of alcohol, was unsteady on his feet and had bloodshot eyes. Castelblanco confessed to drinking whiskey prior to the crash, according to Metro Police.
Castelblanco is charged with vehicular homicide by intoxication, leaving the scene of a fatal crash, failure to render aid, and failure to notify law enforcement. He is being held in lieu of $100,000 bond.
