NASHVILLE, Tenn. — An online petition to reopen the Lauren Agee case has garnered thousands of signatures this week.
The petition aims to have District Attorney Bryant Dunaway reopen Agee’s case.
The DeKalb County Sheriff's Office ruled the death accidental, suggesting she fell from a cliff at Center Hill Lake. The medical examiner who performed the autopsy mentioned blunt trauma consistent with a fall and possible drowning and pointed out Agee was intoxicated.
Agee’s family filed a wrongful death lawsuit last December.
Two White County deputies, both on the scene but out-of-jurisdiction at the time, told Fox 17 News they did not believe it was an accident. Two new witnesses have also come forward in the case, the ex-girlfriend of one of the people named in the wrongful death lawsuit and a man who reached out to Fox 17 News who said he was at Center Hill Lake that weekend.
Now, a friend of Agee hopes that if enough people sign the online petition, Dunaway will see it and reopen the case. As of Tuesday afternoon, the petition had 10,830 signatures.
Agee’s mom Sherry Smith said she completely supports the petition.
"The immense outpouring of support for this petition proves that a great number of individuals in the community are questioning the circumstances around Lauren's death and the lack of a proper investigation," Smith told Fox 17 News. "We hope this brings us closer to this case being reopened by the FBI in order to uncover the truth."
