Two killed in 9-vehicle crash on I-24 in Hopkinsville

UPDATE: Kentucky State Police said two people were killed in a nine-vehicle crash on I-24 in Hopkinsville on Monday morning.

Mary Engrav, 55, and Joan Lyons, 58, both of Waukon, Iowa died as a result of the crash.

KSP said the chain reaction crash first started when a Tennessee driver operating a Freightliner tractor and semi-trailer approached stopped traffic and wasn't able to stop himself.

That vehicle hit a Ford F-150 being driven by Engrav, with Lyons as her backseat passenger.

Engrav's truck then struck another Freightliner and semi-trailer in front of her, causing the tractor to swerve and strike two other vehicles. Vehicles continued to collide with stopped vehicles, including two other cars and a commercial motor vehicle.

People were able to exit their vehicles after they came to a stop and some burst into flames.

Egrav was pronounced dead at the scene and Lyons died after being transported to Vanderbilt University Medical Center. Several other people involved were transported to local hospitals.

The investigation is ongoing. It's unclear right now who, if anyone, will face charges.


At least one person is dead in a multiple vehicle crash on Interstate 24 in Christian County.

It happened near mile marker 79 at about 9:50 a.m. Monday,

Right now, Kentucky State Police said one person was killed in the crash.

The investigation is ongoing and westbound lanes are closed at this time.
