Murray State University partnered with the Kentucky Nurses Association to honor a Kentucky teen killed in a deadly high school shooting in January.

Bailey Holt, 15, and Preston Ryan Cope, 15, were killed when a student opened fire on the commons area of Marshall County High School. Another 18 students, ranging in age from 14 to 18, were injured, more than a dozen of them from gunshot wounds.

Nancy Armstrong, assistant professor for MSU's School of Nursing and Health Professions, said they created the Bailey Holt Memorial Scholarship to honor Holt and her dreams of becoming an obstetrical nurse.

Armstrong, who is also the chair of the local chapter of the Kentucky Nurses Association, said a nurse in their chapter reached out after the shooting with the idea.

"I wish she could be here to go to nursing school, but we wanted to do something where her spirit of caring would live on," Armstrong said.

Students eligible for the scholarship include:

  • graduates of Marshall County High School accepted into MSU's BSN program
  • graduates of West Kentucky Community and Technical College and admitted to the RN-to-BSN program at MSU

The scholarship most likely won't be a reoccurring fund because they don't want to detract for the fundraising for the victims and their families. It will be available for the upcoming spring and fall semesters.

Armstrong said they wanted to create something positive from such a terrible tragedy.

"I hope it gives her family some comfort," Armstrong said.

A member of the KNA has been in contact with Holt's family, who said they are very pleased and supportive of the scholarship.
