A middle school PE teacher was arrested after trying to strangle an 8th grade student, according to Metro Police.

A school resource officer assigned to John Early Middle arrested teacher Michael E. Davis, 60, on a charge of felony aggravated assault by strangulation.

Davis was reportedly playing basketball with the student when the two got into an argument. The student walked up behind Davis clapping his hands and pushing up against him, according to a Metro Police report. Davis allegedly turned, put the student into a chokehold and took him to the ground.

The school resource officer and several students separated the teacher and student as the student's face turned red and he was having difficulty breathing. Davis, then reportedly let go of the student.

A judicial commissioner has set the teacher's bond at $5,000.
