The Metro Public Health Department amended Nashville's mask mandate Friday.

The mask mandate now does not require facial coverings or masks to be worn while outdoors in public spaces or while in places of worship.

The order that was first approved on June 25, 2020, still urges people to maintain social distancing and wear face coverings or masks when interacting with others in indoor public places or when social distancing cannot be achieved.

Under the amended order, a face covering will not be required in the following settings:

  • While outdoors in public spaces – maintaining a physical distance is still encouraged
  • Within one’s own home or inside someone else’s home
  • By those younger than two years old
  • By those who cannot medically tolerate wearing a face covering
  • Inside a vehicle, provided the vehicle is not being used for public transportation or vehicle for hire
  • By those working alone in separate office spaces or in non-public workplaces that have more than adequate area for social distancing
  • When wearing a face covering poses a safety or security risk
  • When actively eating or drinking in public at a restaurant, bar or other food beverage establishment
  • While engaged in outdoor work or recreation
  • While in a place of worship
  • While in a building or indoor space owned, managed or leased by the State of Tennessee or federal government

Businesses will still be required to post mask and face coverings notices. Masks and face coverings are still required in K-12 schools when social distancing is not happening, as well as on buses to and from school.
