Metro Police say a man was drunk when he struck a pedestrian and fled the scene.

Tekleab Bekuretsion, 26, is now charged with DUI and leaving the scene of a serious injury crash after the incident along Layfayette Street early Tuesday morning.

Police said officers found victim Timothy Brito, 35, lying in the roadway near First Avenue South after he had been hit and carried more than 500 yards before falling to the pavement near I-40.

Brito, who is homeless, was transported to Vanderbilt University Medical Center where he is in "extremely critical condition."

After the crash, a Metro officer pulled over the suspect vehicle involved along Murfreesboro Pike at Kermit Drive and said Bekuretsion, who appeared drunk, didn't know that he was in a crash. Police said fresh blood was on the suspect's vehicle and his car clearly showed that it had been in a crash. The suspect had been driving without his headlights on.

Bekuretsion’s bond was set at $4,500 and he's since been released from jail.
