Nashville, Tenn. (WZTV) — Metro Police say that they have arrested a man in connection to a stabbing that happened Friday at Jason Aldean's Bar.
Friday at 2:23 a.m. officers found a man with five stab wounds at Jason Alden's bar on Broadway. Officers say that security staff told them that Melvin Jarrett was the suspected attacker. They were familiar with Jarrett and said that he hung out in the area frequently.
Security staff say they saw Jarrett on Sunday morning at 2:30 a.m. and chased him down and took him into custody. The called police who came and transported the defendant to the Central Precinct for an interview.
After he was read his Miranda Rights police say that Jarrett signed a rights waiver and admitted to attempting to sell crack cocaine to the victim. Jarrett said that the victim tried to get him to go away and then punched him in the face.
The defendant told officers that after he was punched by the victim he stabbed with a knife that he keeps only for self defense. He told officers that to his understanding, the victim had no weapons and then admitted that he should have used his hand to defend himself instead of the knife.
Officers asked Jarrett about the knife and he said that it was with the officers who took his things when he was brought in for questioning. Officers found a Gerber pocketknife they say was used to assault the victim. They also found one gram of a powdery white substance. Both items were taken to the MNPD property room and filed as evidence.
Melvin Jarrett was taken into custody and charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, possession of a controlled substance, evading arrest and a probation violation. His bond is set at $58,000.
