In his own words, Tennessee Governor Bill Haslam explained why he granted clemency to Cyntoia Brown in a one-on-one interview with FOX 17 News anchor Stacy Case.

After a worldwide outcry for her freedom from celebrities like Rihanna, Kim Kardashian West and Amy Schumer, international pressure was placed on Haslam to make a decision with just a number of days before he leaves office.

The outgoing governor determined on Jan. 7 that Brown will be released on terms of parole supervision on August 7.

Brown has served 15 years in prison after being convicted in the 2004 murder of Johnny Allen. Advocates say the then-16-year-old was a victim of sex trafficking when Allen purchased her for sex.
