TAZEWELL, Tenn. (WZTV) — The family of a 77-year-old volunteer firefighter who died this week is mourning the loss of their hero.
Roger Estes, a Navy veteran and grandfather, was killed on July 4 while directing traffic for an event in Tazewell, Tennessee.
“He would put a smile on your face every day and would do anything for anyone,” Bethany Estes told FOX 17 News.
Bethany says Estes worked as a full-time firefighter for 22 years in the town of Derry, New Hampshire. He was volunteering for a department in East Tennessee when he died.
The Tennessee Highway Patrol (THP) reports Estes was stuck by a pickup truck while directing traffic on Highway 33.
“He was a hero and an inspiration to a lot of people. He will be missed by many,” Bethany said.
