Former Wilson County High teacher, softball coach found guilty of statutory rape

A former Wilson County High School teacher, accused of having an inappropriate relationship with a student, was found guilty of two counts of statutory rape.

Mike Sheppard, former teacher and softball coach, was found guilty of the charges on Friday. The sheriff's office the investigation into Sheppard involved a student.

Shepard began teaching at Wilson Central in 2009 and started coaching in 2010. When news first broke about the investigation, someone close with the softball team, who did not want to go on camera, described Shepherd as a family man with several young children, saying the investigation was 'hard to believe.'

Sheppard is set to be sentenced on Jan. 19.
