UPDATE (5-8-20)

Davidson County Sheriff Daron Hall is giving Nashville a glimpse of what COVID-19 looks like inside jails.

There are currently 949 people behind bars in Davidson County. Of those, 48 inmates are in some form of medical restriction as a result of the virus. They may be exposed to someone who has tested positive for COVID-19, symptomatic and awaiting results, or have positive cases themselves.

So far, 20 Davidson County inmates and nine employees have confirmed cases of coronavirus. Of those, 14 inmates have recovered and six staffers have recovered and returned to work.

Around 600 people work in the jails and about half of staffers have been tested.

Sheriff Hall said people working in the jail system are facing challenging times since the exposure risk is high for employees.

At this point, testing is on an as-needed basis. If an inmate is symptomatic, the sheriff insists they are isolated and explained they are seeing more positive cases among lower security inmates.

The new downtown detention center slated to open in May is now being used as a makeshift medical ward for COVID-19.

UPDATE: (4-15-20)

Additional Davidson County inmates have tested positive for COVID-19, Sheriff Daron Hall announced Thursday morning.

There are now eight inmates in DCSO custody who tested positive for the virus. They are in medical isolation.

The sheriff's office said five employees have tested positive for the virus and the first positive staff member has already recovered and returned to work.

DCSO reported the first COVID-19 inmate case at the beginning of April. The inmate's symptoms were described as "mild."

That COVID-19 positive inmate is between the ages of 31 and 40. He was initially taken into custody in February and is being jailed on a felony drug charge.

“I have emphasized from the beginning of this public health emergency our facilities are a microcosm of the Nashville community and we fully expected to have positive cases – that day has now arrived,” Hall said. “We are working closely with the medical provider and health department to ensure the safety of both our staff and the inmate population. Last month, the DCSO devised a housing plan to accommodate the medical isolation situation we face today and we hope to see a continued decrease in the number of those incarcerated.”
