Tanker fire kills driver on I-24

Rutherford County Fire Rescue

A person has died in a tanker fire on I-24 in Smyrna Thursday morning.

Rutherford County Rescue officials confirm the driver died in the blaze.

Black smoke could be seen rising from the scene near Baker Rd/Almaville Rd.

The interstate was shut down for about an hour. All lanes have since reopened.

The truck apparently unloaded poly oil earlier in Nashville. Officials said they were very thankful that the tanker, which didn't catch on fire, was practically empty.

Officials aren't sure why the tanker truck left the roadway, causing the crash and fire in the truck.

The driver has not yet been identified.

This is a developing story that will be updated.
