NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WZTV) — An organization intended to help animals is currently being accused of animal cruelty.
The director of Montgomery County Animal Care and Control says they started investigating the “Cats Are Us" non-profit after receiving complaints about sick animals.
Director Kaske says the building was overrun with 94 cats when they stopped by.
“She was adopting out cats, she would take in cats from the community but from the size of the facility and resources she had I think became very overwhelming,” Kaske said.
Kaske says Clarksville Police instructed his department to seize the cats.
A veterinarian checked each animal and found many of the cats were sick, including some with feline aids.
At least one cat was too sick to save.
“The cat was extremely ill, it was paralyzed, we had tried to treat it for a couple of days, our veternarian did the best she could with it but ultimately wasn’t able to be helped,” Kaske said.
Kaske says police issued a citation to the owner of “Cats Are Us" for aggravated animal cruelty.
FOX 17 News tried reaching out to the nonprofit that's still actively seeking homes for its animals on social media, but requests were not returned.
Director Kaske says “Cats Are Us" has been instructed not to take in any more animals.
The cats they still have were under the care of a local pet store during the investigation.
Kaske says it will be up to a judge to decide whether the rescue will be shut down for good.
The cats are now with various cat rescues and the Montgomery County Animal Care and Control center.
Some feral cats that were not able to be adopted as pets are with a barn rescue.
