40 homes destroyed, 40 damaged in small Sevier County community

Dozens of families are without a home Tuesday in Wears Valley.

Two miles west of Gatlinburg, numerous homes were destroyed during Monday night’s wildfire.

Fox 17 toured the damage with the Wears Valley Fire Department and saw homes destroyed and vehicles burnt to a shell.

The department says 40 homes were burnt to the ground, and another 40 were damaged. This all happened on Hideaway Mountain and on Dogwood Farms Mountain.

“It's really scary you don't know, you don't know where it's coming from or where it's going or anything,” Ann Marie Bevaque, a Wears Valley resident, said.

Fox 17 was told everyone survived on this side of the mountain and that no one had been hurt.

Meanwhile, for the rest of Tuesday night, fire crews will make sure none of the hot spots will rekindle, as this community of about 6,000 tries to heal after such a devastating fire.
