The touching story of a child cancer patient who's all grown up now and using the degree he earned at MTSU in Murfreesboro to share his hope with other children fighting for their lives right now.

Joel Alsup's life's work springs forth from a St. Jude Production Studio every day in the stories of hope he gets to share with the world. Alsup explains, "That's especially important to me because I was a St Jude patient myself 28 years ago."

His scary diagnosis came at Christmastime in 1987 when the right handed seven year old couldn't use his right hand any longer. He was in pain. His mom says the pediatrician called and said the X-ray showed a tumor in Alsup's right shoulder. The tumor had broken the bone.

Alsup's bone cancer- or osteosarcoma- meant a year of treatment at St. Jude and a tough decision to amputate to save his life. He adds, "Every beautiful moment I've had for 28 years is because of this place." Alsup quickly learned how to do everything with his left hand and even played baseball, basketball and golf through school.

Alsup says he knew he wanted to use his degree from MTSU to help the hospital that helped him explaining, "When I graduated there 14 years ago, we were kind of starting our own video production thing here. I can't think of a better gift in life than to be able to give back to the place that saved me and to give hope to the families that are going through this now."

Alsup's videos of patients at st jude are used to spread the word about the ground breaking research at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital and the lives saved by new research and new treatments discovered there.

There are children right now at St. Jude who want to grow up like Joel Alsup.
