The Columbia Police Department issued the following safety tips:

- Slow down in all school zones

- Follow other vehicles at a safe distance

- Stay off of your cell phone. Don't be a distracted driver.

- Keep an eye out for students that are walking to and from school

- Expect delays when driving near school areas

- Always be prepared to stop when approaching a school bus

- Remember, a new law went into effect prohibiting the use of handheld phones while driving in an active school zone
