Nashville gives away 500 pairs of total solar eclipse viewing glasses for free

The Metro Public Health Department is gave away 500 pairs of total solar eclipse viewing glasses for free.

The glasses were given away Tuesday starting at 9 a.m. at the Lentz Public Health Center at 2500 Charlotte Avenue. All 500 pairs were given away by noon.

Health officials warn not to view the sun with the naked eye. The sun produces enough light to permanently damage your retina. This can happen within seconds of staring at the sun.

Nashville will have one of the best viewing spots in the country for the total solar eclipse on Aug. 21.
