NASHVILLE, Tenn.(Eric Alvarez) -- The personal information of some 1,700 kids with disabilities could be in danger after the Metro Public Health Department said it lost index cards containing their names, addresses, birthdays, social security numbers and medical coding information .

When asked if any HIPPA laws were violated, department spokesperson Brian Todd said, "We contacted our HIPAA compliance folks and we've been working with them ever since to do these steps and of course we're keeping them informed and taking direction from there along the way."

The documents belonged to Children's Special Services, a department that serves low income children with chronic illnesses and disabilities.

"We believe the cards probably ended up in a landfill but we don't know that we can't be 100 percent sure," Todd said.

The department says it's offering free identity protection services to the affected families through a company called AllClear, and is taking steps to keep this from happening again.

"Something as simple as keeping that kind of information that would be on an index card in a secured computer server, we're considering and  we believe those steps need to be taken," Todd said.

The health department says no other records were lost.
