Metro Council Member Pushes to Downsize Council -- Kai Beech

For Emily Evans bigger doesn't mean better.

"A large council is kind of like a large classroom, said the District 23 Metro Councilwoman. "When you have a large classroom filed with kids its hard to communicate complex information evenly and accurately to everyone.

In Evans analogy the classroom is Metro Council and the kids are the council members. And Evans wants the council she works for to shrink from 40 seats to 27.

"A 40-member council is a political deal that was struck in 1963, she said. "And I think as a city we've moved beyond that.

Ultimately Evans wants to move beyond the signature collecting for this amendment and onto the ballot for voting. She also wants to increase consecutive term limits from two to three terms.

"The idea that you can come in be a council member for eight years and be good at that job is just not valid, she said.

But not everyone agrees. Metro Councilman Phil Clairborne said reducing the size of the council will reduce the peoples level of representation.
