Vanderbilt Student Raises $50K for Tuition After Tragedy -- Meagan O'Halloran

Stream Fox 17 newscasts LIVE starting with TN Mornings at 5 am and News at 9 pm.

NASHVILLE- A Vanderbilt undergrad student is learning about the power of social media and online networking. In fact, its exactly what she says saved her future. After enduring a terrible tragedy and hitting tough financial times, Cassie Wessely was afraid she would have to drop out of school. Her mother committed suicide last summer and her father is currently unemployed. Wesselys college job couldnt cover her $64,000 annual tuition fees. She says she took a shot in the dark, and as a last resort, opened up a GoFundMe account. The website hosts users and organizations looking for donations and financial contributions. After Wessely shared her story online the money began pouring in. In three days she made her $25,000 goal and well surpassed it. Wessely has now received close to $50,000 to apply to her college fund. She says staying in school will help her deal with the grief of losing her mother.
