Eagle to be Released into the Wild in Nashville Today

Stream WZTV Fox 17 Newscasts LIVE starting with Fox 17 This Morning at 5am and News at 9pm.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- The American Eagle Foundation is planning to release a bald eagle near the Cumberland River in Nashville today.

The foundation says the release will honor Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency veteran Robert Hatcher. He initiated Tennessee's bald eagle recovery efforts in the early 1980s. The eagle being released will be named "Hatcher's Legacy."

The state wildlife resources agency will also participate in the eagle release.

In the 1960s and `70s, bald eagles were on the brink of extinction. Since then, strict protection laws along with restoration efforts have helped restore the species to America's skies.

As of January 2014, the foundation says there were about 143 successful bald eagle nests in Tennessee.

From those nests, about 250 eaglets fledged in 2013.

Tuesday's release will be at Bell's Bend Outdoor Center at 4187 Old Hickory Blvd. in west Nashville.
