Vanderbilt Trauma Doctor Teaches Metro Students Conflict Resolution

Stream WZTV Fox 17 Newscasts LIVE starting with Fox 17 This Morning at 5am and News at 9pm.

A lot of people complain about the epidemic of teen violence, but a trauma doctor at Vanderbilt is doing something about it. Disturbed by the teen on teen violence he was seeing in the emergency room, orthopedic doctor Manny Sethi and his research team convinced Metro schools to give them access to the classroom. They took a well-established conflict resolution program to students at ten Metro middle schools.'

At the end, at least a third of the students said they felt better equipped to resolve heated situations without violence.

"I used to be like the one that just snaps on everybody," said eight grader Serena Easley. "Like I get mad if you're in my way, I just go off.  But like now it's like, well everyone is not the victim of my problem."

One in four students said they felt safer in schools after the training. Dr. Sethi is hoping to take the program to even more schools in the months ahead.
