Public Defender Candidate Holds Drawing for Gun -- Mikayla Lewis

Stream WZTV Fox 17 Newscasts LIVE starting with Fox 17 This Morning at 5am and News at 9pm.

Joe Kinder didn't expect others to get fired up when he decided to help raise campaign funds for Robert Dalton. Kinder held a drawing a Public Defender gun.

Dalton is running against incumbent public defender Donna Orr Hargrove.

Dalton says, "My opponent is an extreme anti-second amendment. Apparently she thought if she called up to Nashville and said we were down here giving away a gun that people in Nashville would be anti-Second Amendment as well."

Hargrove couldn't be reached for comment today, but she posted on her Facebook page that this election is becoming an embarrassment. She wrote she and her staff did nothing wrong, but they are being ridiculed.

Dalton says, "What we wanted to do is preserve the spirit of what our supporter had started."

Dalton says he bought the gun with his own money instead of Kinder purchasing it.  The candidate says he gave back all the money to those who bought raffle tickets offering free ones instead to anyone interested.

Today with the help of family and friends, Dalton drew the ticket for the gun.

The winners John Hines shared his thoughts on the events leading up to the gun draw over the phone.

Hines says, "There's always someone complaining about something, but I was real proud that I won."

Dalton says," The Second Amendment is not outdated. It is a vital part of our society and it must be defended."

Dalton says there will be a background check for the winner of the gun.
