Abandoned Newborn Reunited With Paramedic Savior

Stream WZTV Fox 17 Newscasts LIVE starting with Fox 17 This Morning at 5am and News at 9pm.

Covered in blood and leaves, her umbilical cord still attached and fighting freezing temperatures, a newborn girl was saved by a paramedic who had an instinct to look for her at a cemetery just one more time.

That was the scene 18 years ago. Paramedic Charlie Heflin was listening to scanner traffic which reported emergency personnel were searching for a newborn. They had received a tip the child was left under a pine tree at a cemetery, but couldn't find her. Following his instinct, Charlie decided to check at a different cemetery and found Skyler James.

Skyler was abandoned by her mother, but is now graduating from a Chicago high school. The paramedic who found her shared his story with MS News Now and they were on-hand when he and Skyler were re-united during her graduation.
