FOX News--Following in the wake of nearly 30,000 students in New York who opted out of taking standardized testing aligned with Common Core standards, an Alabama student found herself suspended for her refusal.

Whitesburg Middle School 8th grader Alyssa McKinney was given two in-school suspensions the first two days whe opted out and then given an out-of-school suspension when she opted out on the third day.

McKinney isn't the only student to face consequences for her opposition.
Seirra Olivero, a 13-year-old student at Orange-Ulster BOCES in New York, said she was suspended from school last month for "insubordination" after telling classmates they could opt out of taking the Common Core English test.

In Arkport, N.Y., meanwhile, school officials prompted outrage after rewarding children in third through sixth grades who took the English test with ice cream, while denying it to those students who opted out.

School administrators defended the decision, noting that students have been rewarded for taking standardized tests in previous years.
