Family Struggles Redeeming Air Conditioning Warranty -- Meagan O'Halloran

Stream Fox 17 newscasts LIVE starting with TN Mornings at 5 am and News at 9 pm.

FAIRVIEW- Sami Cone is learning all about reading inbetween the lines when it comes to buying a warranty. Cone claims she purchased an upgraded master warranty for her at home air conditioning unit from Sears over the phone. Cone claims she never received a contract and says she is now having trouble getting repair work done for her broken unit.

According to Cone, Sears is unable to honor her warranty because the unit is installed in an upstairs crawl space and is not accessible. Cone said she purchased the warranty over the phone and sight unseen and considers this to be a loophole for Sears. FOX 17 is waiting to hear back from Sears for comment on this complaint.

When deciding whether or not to buy a warranty, experts say you have to do your homework. Ask the right questions, read the full warranty before you buy it, and consider the reputation of the company offering the warranty. If problems arise, you should try to resolve it with the retailer first. If that doesnt work contact the manufacturer. If youre unable to make progress there you can consider small claims court or even a lawsuit.

If you are needing expert advice or find yourself in a similar situation the best place to start is at the Division of Consumer Affairs. You can reach them at 615-741-4737 or 1-800-342-8385
