Smyrna Man Charged With Rape Nearly Three Years Later

NASHVILLE, Tenn.-- A Smyrna man is behind bars nearly three years after allegedly using a needle to drug and then rape a woman.

In November of 2011, the victim called Murfreesboro Police after waking up from an "incoherent" state. She had been to a local establishment and when she went outside, she was approached by a white male. According to the police report, the man grabbed her arm and she felt something "like a needle" in her arm. When she "came to," she had no memory but stated she "feels" like something had happened.

The woman completed a sex assault kit and toxicology screening and later revealed she had been given two substances which are considered date rape drugs. The test also found the presence of sperm in the DNA report.

A match for Joseph Shelton, 40, was found by TBI in August of last year. Although Shelton denies knowing the woman, a Grand Jury has indicted him with one count of rape.
