Teacher Saves Student by Donating Kidney

Stream WZTV Fox 17 Newscasts LIVE starting with Fox 17 This Morning at 5am and News at 9pm.

A teacher in the UK saved the life of a student by donating a kidney to her, according to the Newham Recorder.

Ray Coe, a special educational needs coordinator at the Royal Docks Community School in London, heard Alya Ahmed Ali, 13, was undergoing kidney dialysis and needed a new kidney.

The news outlet reports the teenager suffers from hydrocephalus, a condition which causes a build-up of fluid in the brain, as well as severe learning difficulties.

Coe said he knew immediately after hearing of her need, it was the right thing to do.

"When we told Alya, she just gave me a big squeeze and her face lit up," he told the Newham Recorder. "It brings tears to my eyes whenever I think of that."

The transplant surgery in February was declared a success, and both are due back after the Easter break.
