UPDATE: Chris Johnson has officially been informed of his release.

General Manager Ruston Webster released the following statement about the departure of CJ2K.

"As an organization, we want to thank Chris for his contributions to the Titans.  Chris produced many memorable moments, broke franchise records and was durable over his six year career with our team.

We have had an open dialogue with Chris' agent, Joel Segal, over the last few weeks, and we appreciate the patience and professionalism they have shown throughout this process.  We made an effort to trade Chris but were unable to do so.

We wish Chris the best and thank him for the six seasons he spent with us."

NASHVILLE, Tenn.--- Tennessee Titans running back Chris Johnson is expected to be released from the team today. The veteran running back is due $8 million this season and changes in the front office along with the arrival of coach Ken Whisenhunt make his expected departure the latest move in what has been an active last few months for the Titans.

Johnson arrived back in Nashville early this morning and will be taking a physical with the team before his release. According to an NFL Media report, a source close to the back believes he could fail the physical after undergoing a "cleanup" procedure on his knee just a few months ago. That said, the issue was a minor one and isn't expected to affect his value.

While Johnson won't necessarily earn his $8 million elsewhere, teams in serious need of help at the position could still offer him a handsome sum. The New York Jets are the likely to lead the pack interested in the speedy back and the Broncos, Giants and Cowboys could also court CJ2K. Not only do they each have a need for back like Johnson, they each have around $10M or more in cap space to spare.

As for the Titans, the arrival of Dexter McCluster ensures they still have a "speed back" on the roster to compliment the stronger running style of Shonn Greene. Ironically, if Johnson winds up with the Jets, he and Greene will be essentially swapping places just one year after Greene's arrival
