Gallup: Tennessee Ranks No. 7 in Obesity

Tennessee's obesity rate ranks seventh highest in the country, according to a Gallup poll. The polling company said nearly three in every ten Tennesseans are obese.

Tennessee ranked seventh last year, as well, in Gallup's poll, though its obesity rate went from 29.6 percent to 31.3 percent. Overall, the nation's obesity rate increased to 27.1% in 2013 from 26.2% in 2012.



The states with the highest rate of obesity are:

  1. 1. Mississippi: 35.4%
  2. 2. West Virginia: 34.4%
  3. 3. Delaware: 34.3%
  4. 4. Louisiana: 32.7%
  5. 5. Arkansas: 32.3%
  6. 6. South Carolina: 31.4%
  7. 7. Tennessee: 31.3%
  8. 8. Ohio: 30.9%
  9. 9. Kentucky: 30.6%
  10. 10. Oklahoma: 30.5%


The states with the lowest levels of obesity are:

  1. 1. Montana: 19.6%
  2. 2. Colorado: 20.4%
  3. 3. Nevada: 21.1%
  4. 4. Minnesota: 22.0%
  5. 5. Massachusetts: 22.2%
  6. 6. Connecticut: 23.2%
  7. 7. New Mexico: 23.5%
  8. 8. California: 23.6%
  9. 9. Hawaii: 23.7%
  10. 10. New York: 24.0%


Gallup polled 178,075 adults for the study.
