Affluenza Debate Reignited With du Pont Heir Lawsuit Details

Stream WZTV Fox 17 Newscasts LIVE starting with Fox 17 This Morning at 5am and News at 9pm.

Robert H. Richards, a du Pont family heir, is facing a lawsuit from his former wife which accuses him of sexually abusing his toddler son. But this isn't the first time he's been in court on such charges. Richards pleaded guilty in 2008 to fourth-degree rape of his 3-year-old daughter but avoided jail time because the judge believed he "would not fare well" in jail

Instead, Richards received 8 years probation. The News Journal reports the details are now just coming to light due to the current lawsuit which alleges Richards also abused his son. According to his ex-wife, Richards used his "family's wealth and position in the community" to avoid harsh sentencing in 2008 and avoid jail.

During a press conference last week, the family's attorney Thomas Crumplar says "Making matters worse this self admitted rapist and child abuser has not paid a single penny to these children for his crimes."

The lawsuit seeks "compensatory and punitive damages for assault, negligence and intentional and negligent infliction of emotional distress on his two children."
