Daylight Saving Time: Why We Spring Forward Sunday

Stream WZTV Fox 17 Newscasts LIVE starting with Fox 17 This Morning at 5am and News at 9pm.

NASHVILLE, Tenn.-- Prepare to "Spring Forward" at 2am this Sunday. March 9th is the day you will need to set your clocks ahead one hour for Daylight Saving Time.

Besides losing an hour of sleep, there has been plenty of debate against the practice of changing our clocks every March and November. According to a Rasmussen survey last year, only 37% of people think DST is "worth the hastle."

If Tennessee Rep. Curry Todd of Collierville has his way, changing your clocks will become a thing of the past. Rep. Todd is sponsoring bill 1909, which would make DST permanent in our state. The bill has been deferred until March 18th but if passed, is expected to take effect in July.

So where did DST come from? Benjamin Franklin first proposed the idea as a way to make the most of our days while also conserving energy. Then, in 1916 during World War I, Germany adopted the practice as a way to conserve energy during the war. When the United States jumped into the fray, we also used DST, although it did not become fully adopted until 1918.
