Wilson Co. Hotel Taxes May Rise

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Hotel owners in Wilson County worry a tax increase could put them out of business.

Wilson County leaders want to raise the hotel tax on customers to help pay for a new Expo center at the Wilson County fairgrounds.

If the legislature approves the change, Mt. Juliet would have one of the highest hotel tax rates in the country, topping 20%.

Hotel owners say groups and business customers will choose a different place to stay if taxes are too high. "The competition within counties surrounding them is always there, so the average consumer can go one county to another just based on tax rate," says hotel owner Roshan Patel.

State lawmakers chose to send the one-percent tax increase proposal back to a subcommittee for further consideration.
