NFL Official: Dunking Football Will Be A Foul

Stream WZTV Fox 17 Newscasts LIVE starting with Fox 17 This Morning at 5am and News at 9pm.

NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) - The NFL's head of officiating said on a radio show that dunking the football will be a no-no this coming season.

Dean Blandino, the NFL's vice president of officiating, told host Dan Patrick that dunking was "grandfathered" in when the NFL created a rule about not using the ball as a prop, but that is changing.

"Dunking will come out," Blandino told Patrick. "Using the ball as a prop, or any object as a prop -- whether that's the goalpost, the crossbar -- that will come out, and that will be a foul next season."

Blandino also oversees the league's instant-replay program.

Future Hall of Famer Tony Gonzalez was an avid dunker after touchdowns.  He Tweeted:  "The NFL says no more dunking over the goalpost. This one I don't understand. Looks like I got out just in time."
