Questions Arise in Montgomery Co. Flu Death

Stream WZTV Fox 17 Newscasts LIVE starting with Fox 17 This Morning at 5am and News at 9pm.

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. - A woman dies of the flu in Montgomery County. Her family is questioning the medical care she received before she passed away. They claim Gateway Medical Center forgot about her in the emergency room. They're searching for answers. 42 year old Michelle Greenfield came down with the flu and on February 16 an ambulance pulled right up to the emergency room to drop her off. Her family says she was left unattended after that and a short time later she was dead. Just days ago, Greenfield was a happy and healthy 42 year old. Pictures are the closest her family can get to her now. When Michelle came down with the flu, it was bad enough to call 911. Within 6 minutes an ambulance arrived and took her to Gateway Medical Center.

What happened after that, we aren't quite sure. Because of privacy laws, Gateway Medical Center can't tell us how long Michelle had to wait. However, in a written statement, the hospital did tell us its emergency room policy. After an ambulance arrives, paramedics give ER nurses a verbal face to face hand off report. From there, the nurse determines where the patient is placed, depending on condition. In this case, Michelle's family claims the nursing staff forgot about her and demanded she see a doctor.

By that time, it was too late. Michelle's family tells us she died of Sepsis, possibly as a complication from the flu.
