GM Expands Recall by 842,000 Cars

Stream WZTV Fox 17 Newscasts LIVE starting with Fox 17 This Morning at 5am and News at 9pm.

General Motors doubled their recall to 1.6 million cars on Tuesday to fix faulty ignition switches linked to several fatal car wrecks.

Two weeks ago, GM announced a recall for more than 780,000 Pontiacs G5s and Chevy Cobalts. The list now includes 842,000 Saturn Ion compacts, Chevrolet HHR SUVs and Pontiac Solstice and Saturn Sky sports cars.

Here are the vehicles with years affected:

  • 2003-2007 Saturn Ion
  • 2006-2007 Chevy HHR
  • 2006-2007 Saturn Sky
  • 2006-2007 Pontiac Solstice
  • 2005-2007 Chevy Cobalt
  • 2007 Pontiac G5

GM says that 31 crashes and 13 front-seat deaths have been linked to faulty switches that will shut off the engine and electrical power. That can disable power-assisted brakes, the steering and front air bags.

Dealers will replace the ignition switch for free but no time frame has been given about how long that would take.
