MURFREESBORO, Tenn.-- A new poll released by Middle Tennessee State University shows a majority of Tennesseans are open to allowing medical marijuana use, but opposed to legalizing the drug in general.

Two-thirds of residents believe medical marijuana should be allowed compared to 33-percent who don't agree with making it legal to the general public.

In addition to marijuana use, the poll also posed the question if gay and lesbian couples should be allowed to legally marry in the state. 64 percent opposed allowing gay marriage compared to just 26 percent in-favor. The dividing line fell along religious differences and beliefs. 77 percent of evangelical Christians opposed gay marriage, whereas 51 percent of non-evangelicals supported gay marriage.
