NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- It was a rescue to remember in Murfreesboro after firefighters received an unusual call. There wasn't a fire, but a family's parrot needed saving.

For nearly 19 years Larry the Macaw has been part of the Jansen family. Monday afternoon Larry decided to fly the coop. "He saw the open door and bolted," says bird owner Jan Jansen.
It's not unusual for Larry to spend time outside, but he has never flown away before. "And Larry was on the very top of the roof," says Jansen.

Jan Jansen knew Larry needed rescuing, so she called the Murfreesboro Fire Department. "This was a first for me. I never had to try to chase down a bird," says firefighter Ben Honeycutt.

Firefighters used a ladder, but Larry got spooked and flew to the tallest tree he could find. "I tried to coerce him back toward me, but it's like the closer I got to him, the farther he wanted to go away," says Honeycutt.

Firefighters had to get creative. They couldn't use their ladder on the tree, but they did have a firehose. After a tumble from the tree, Larry was caught on the ground.

Larry is still a little shaken up, and he will now be spending plenty of time in his cage. Jan Jansen is very grateful. "They tried everything they knew to do to rescue this bird, so we were very very thankful," says Jansen.

Larry's wings are clipped, so it was surprising to see him fly. Jan Jansen says she will be taking him in for another clipping very soon.
