WASTE WATCH: Prison Future Could Cost Taxpayers

Scott Couch

Nashville, TN

A battle over dreams for a piece of Tennessee history.  The old Tennessee State Prison in West Nasvhille was closed in 1992.  Over the decades, the prison has fallen into a state of disrepair.  For the past year, a trio of local businessmen has been trying to buy it from the state.

To date, the principals in the Pantheon Group say state correction officials have refused to put a price on the property.  T-DOC says it wants to move its administrative offices to the old prison.  The problem is, there's no money to do it and lawmakers may never approve the funding.   Ben Cunningham, head of Tennessee Tax Revolt, a local watchdog group, says inaction only hurts taxpayers investment in the property.  He  says refusing to sell the property for economic development is a disservice to taxpayers.
